The Research Leader Collaborative Research is an integral part of our Research and Development team.

 

Position Details

The Research Leader, Collaborative Research will be responsible for leading a strategic and coordinated research program to drive and sustain growth of our monogastric focused nutritional products.  Reporting to the Senior Director Collaborative Research, The Research Leader works directly with key influencers across swine and poultry groups and regions to understand obstacles to expanded use of our nutritional products and to coordinate efforts to address those needs.  The Research Leader will translate their expertise in monogastric intestinal health, microbiome and/or immunology to enhance our ability to deliver leading nutritional specialty products to the swine and poultry industries.  This role will also be involved in Collaborative Research efforts for ruminant and aqua, ensuring that expertise and knowledge transfer occurs to help support and advance research across the species portfolio.  To this end, the Research Leader will collaborate with external key thought leaders and research institutions to develop and execute targeted research plans aligned to strategic business initiatives. 

Position Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop, maintain and execute a research plan for poultry and swine nutritional specialty products that demonstrate novel and state-of-the-art research outcomes while maintaining flexibility for high-risk high-reward research approaches
  • Develop and maintain contacts in all-level academic research institutions and contract research organizations to stay informed of relevant issues/trends in intestinal health and to conduct projects for demonstration of scientific and economic product value
  • Collaborate with regional, product and species leadership to recognize viable opportunities for the introduction of new or existing nutritional specialty products to a market
  • Navigate and network with cross-functional teams (technical services, sales, business development, and marketing) to identify research needs and gather the information needed to properly prioritize the projects
  • Maintain proactive communication of research across functional groups and support conversion of research findings into marketing and training materials to support global sales efforts
  • Work in an empowered team environment with the ability to lead as well as follow

Qualifications/Skills:

  • A Ph.D in Animal Nutrition, Physiology or related field
  • 5 years of professional R&D experience and/or technical support. 
  • A deep scientific understanding of nutritional specialty products, their potential biological impact, and the benefit to the livestock producer.  Ability to go very deep technically and effectively communicate with academic and industry thought leaders
  • A broad set of scientific skills (design of experiments, statistics, cellular function, animal production research, knowledge of animal feed industry), proven soft skills (influence without authority in a cross-functional environment, client leadership), and a problem solving mindset (ability to think past how things are currently done to how things might be done in the future)
  • Primary experience in swine and poultry livestock species and an understanding of the livestock feed industry and research practices, endpoints used to measure nutritional impact on animal health, growth, nutrient uptake, energy balance, behavior, productivity and sustainability.  Familiarity with ruminant and aquaculture research and industries is a plus.
  • Application of nutrient specialty products for nutrient utilization and disease resistance in swine and poultry species
